Nobody likes seeing those temperatures drop, but it’s even worse for cats. They seek out the best patches of sunlight for their naps to keep them cosy. Even though they have beautiful fur coats, they feel the cold just like us, so it’s important we do our best to look after them during the cold weather.
Winter can be a wonderful time of year but do you know when it is too cold for your cat to go outside? Did you know that anything below 7ºC is too cold for your furry friend? We’ve outlined some of the signs to look out for to keep your cat safe and cosy all year round.
- Dilated pupils
- Difficulty breathing
- Muscle stiffness
- Low blood pressure
- Slow heartbeat
- Shivering
- Cold extremities
- Curling up into a ball
So how can you help?
Of course, if you’re worried, take your cat to your local vet to check them over. However, there are some easy things you can do to help your cat right at home.
Make a cosy spot. If your furry friend is getting too cold, make sure there is a cosy place for them to snuggle up with a blanket. Insulated beds or even hammock beds attached to the radiator can also help keep them warm and they might become their new favourite spot!
Elevating your cat’s bed just a little off the floor can keep them away from drafts and nearer warmer air.
Play with them. This will help boost their body temperature and keep them entertained while they can’t explore outside.
Cuddles! Share your body heat and keep each other warm. That said, remember some cats won’t be as cuddly as others and may prefer their personal space.
Make sure to keep your cat away from any antifreeze or grit over winter too. Wipe up any spills or salty paws in case they ingest it while grooming.
Try a litter tray. Your cat might prefer staying inside to do their business if it’s really cold. Try out our range of Cat litters to keep your cat warm, healthy and clean and your home odour-free.
