Today, May 25th, is Geek Pride Day: a celebration of geek culture which originated in Spain in 2006.
At Sanicat, we’re obsessed with cats and are quite simply their biggest fans. So we wanted to use this day as a chance to show our devotion to them. This is why we've rounded up some of our favourite famous felines from pop culture below.

Salem Saberhagen, from Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Before the Netflix reboot ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,’ based on the characters in the Archie comics, the popular '90s comedy Sabrina The Teenage Witch was on our screens. In the show, teenager Sabrina Spellman lived at 133 Collins Road with her witch aunts Hilda and Zelda, and a cheeky black cat named Salem.
His sarcastic jokes and ingenious plans for world domination made him a character who, even today, remains unforgettable.
Garfield
Any list of famous cats would be incomplete without mentioning this sassy tabby. Known for his lazy attitude and his passion for lasagna, Garfield loves teasing his dog Odie and annoying his owner Jon.
Garfield first came to life as a comic strip, created by the artist Jim Davis in 1978. But he has remained highly popular over the years and has gone on to star in his own cartoon series as well as in feature films.
Puss in Boots, from Shrek 2
The popular DreamWorks film, which found new ways to tell fairy tales, would not have been the same without this ginger feline. The version of Puss in Boots that we meet in this film won all of our hearts thanks to his superb skills as a swordsman, his strong Spanish accent and his ability to act sweet when needed.
Doraemon
Little did manga artists Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko – who wrote under the joint name Fujiko F. Fujio – know that the cosmic cat they created in 1969 would become one of Japan's most recognisable cultural icons, at home and around the world.
The animated series adaptation that arrived in the 70s further boosted his popularity and today, Doraemon has appeared in several films, video games and other commercial products. Because who wouldn't want a cat with a magic pocket that could grant them any wish they’d like?
Hello Kitty
Who’s the most famous cat in the world? For many of us, it has to be Hello Kitty, a character created in 1974 who became a cultural phenomenon and remains fashionable years later. Hello Kitty appears in an animated series and countless branded products that are hugely popular with children, adults and, in particular, fans of Japanese 'kawaii' culture. She’s an icon we’re simply obsessed with.
